The Technology
We render 3D worlds & datasets at cinematic quality directly in a browser, on any device:
•Photogrammetry scans
•Field recordings
•Ecological surveys
Design and user experience sit at the centre of the work. The core foundation of what we do is that design is often undervalued in scientific presentation. We want to unlock worlds that most people wont get to inhabit.
By focusing our resource on user experience research, we are finding new ways of making the inaccessible accessible, turning data that was locked inside research software into something everyone can explore.

The Conservation Disconnect
Three gaps between the reef work already happening and the people who would care about it most.
The Guest Who Never Gets In
Non-swimmers, families with young children, short stays, weather windows that close. Most guests at a reef-adjacent property never actually see the reef the property is famous for.
Work Can Be Hard to Visualise
Hotels invest heavily in marine biology, coral restoration, and reef monitoring. Most of that work stays invisible to guests, press, and award panels. Static reports do not carry the story.
Data Without an Audience
Survey data, photogrammetry scans, and ecological records from in-house marine teams rarely reach the public. The science exists. The tools to turn it into something a guest can explore do not.

Why Interaction Matters
Navigating a true-to-life ecosystem drives emotional connection in a way passive media cannot. When a user can spin a coral head and see structural change over time, abstract concepts like bleaching or restoration become tangible.
AgencyUsers guide their own journey, creating deeper psychological investment than a plaque or a video.
ScaleTrue-to-life 3D reveals the size and structural complexity of coral that flat media flattens.
DiscoveryLearning becomes exploration. Users go looking for information rather than waiting to be shown.
"By focusing on actions that leverage human-centered design, learning science, and emerging technologies, we can impactfully reach as many people as possible to transform ocean indifference into ocean advocacy."The Hydrous • https://thehydro.us/ocean-empathy

The Lobby Situated Digital Twin
We take the reef scans and survey data the marine team already has and turn them into a photoreal, interactive 3D model of the Reef Deck house reef — live on lobby kiosks, in-room tablets, and the main website.
Cinematic ExplorerTouch gestures let non-divers explore the reef topography around the property.
Scientific OverlaysTap highlighted zones to read notes from the resident marine biologists.
Time Series SliderTrack growth and recovery across multiple years of scans.

How It Works: Building the BaselineIntegration with existing scientific initiatives
01
Data Collaboration
We work with the in-house marine team to gather existing survey data, historical imagery, and ecological metrics.
02
Pipeline Processing
Datasets are aligned into a unified 3D environment that can be compared across time.
03
Digital Deployment
Processed models are deployed to lobby hardware and web domains as a touch-optimised 3D map.

The Citizen Science Scanning Excursion
Many guests — particularly diver enthusiasts and underwater photography hobbyists — already carry the kind of camera gear needed to contribute to real photogrammetry datasets. The Living Atlas provides the framework to turn standard snorkelling and diving trips into active conservation missions. Guests contribute to real scientific data and generate shareable memories in the process.
Guided MappingSimple camera rigs and structured swim patterns capture high-fidelity data.
Verifiable ContributionTangible, visual proof that a guest's visit left a mark on the reef record.

How It Works: The Guest LoopTurning observation into active stewardship
01
The ExcursionGuests enrol in a 'Reef Mapper' dive and learn how to use the camera rigs.
02
The CaptureGuests swim guided paths to capture new structural footage.
03
The ExhibitionFootage is processed and the updated reef map goes live in the lobby, crediting the guest contributors.
04
The Take HomeGuests receive a digital memento of their contribution, extending the connection beyond the stay.

Branded Web Experience
A fully white-labelled, embeddable 3D web experience that lets prospective guests, researchers, and ocean enthusiasts explore the Reef Deck house reef from any browser — extending the conservation story well beyond the physical resort.
Embedded in the Main SiteSlots into existing web properties. No external apps, no downloads, no extra infrastructure.
A Reason to BookProspective guests see the actual reef before they book, making the ecosystem part of the decision.

How It Works: Global Digital DeploymentConnecting the world to the house reef
01
Cloud OptimisationThe digital twin is compressed into a lightweight format for rapid web streaming.
02
White LabellingThe interface is customised to match Reef Deck brand guidelines.
03
Simple EmbeddingThe web team receives a code snippet. Drop in as easily as a video.
04
Engagement AnalyticsTrack views, popular angles, and interaction hotspots to measure reach.

The Value EcosystemCompounding value across three pillars.
The Value EcosystemOne platform. Three beneficiaries.
Guest ExperienceInteractive storytelling for every visitor.
Universal AccessEvery guest can explore the reef from the lobby — swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
Active StewardshipGuests contribute to the reef map and watch their footage appear in the exhibition.
Showing the WorkMaking existing conservation investment visible.
Visible ConservationYears of reef monitoring and restoration become visible to guests, press, and award panels.
Shareable 3D AssetsA library of branded, interactive 3D content — grounded in real data, not stock footage.
Scientific AmplificationExpanding the capacity of local biologists.
Expanded CoverageGuest participation multiplies the ground researchers can cover.
A Persistent RecordEach scan adds to a multi-year archive that grows more valuable over time.

Why The Living Atlas
The team combines a deep respect for the ocean with a technical obsession for making conservation accessible. Existing marine research plus modern spatial computing produces digital experiences that build real environmental connection.
Low-Friction IntegrationPlugs into existing hotel hardware and works alongside resident marine biologists with minimal extra workload.
A Lasting LegacyEach deployment contributes to a persistent library of reef models, supporting global research alongside the guest experience.
"To protect the ocean, people first need to understand and experience it. Our technology brings the hidden beauty of the house reef directly to current and future guests."The Living Atlas Project • Our Philosophy
